The successful KAIROS-run Empowering Temporary Foreign Workers during COVID-19 project will continue to fund migrant justice program partners until September 30, 2022. The Government of Canada has provided an additional $2,487,165 to support and assist temporary foreign workers during the pandemic. 

On May 13, the Holy See Press Office announced that Pope Francis, “having accepted invitations from civil and ecclesiastical authorities, as well as the Indigenous communities,” will travel to Canada from July 24 – 30 and visit the cities of Edmonton, Québec, and Iqaluit.

The KAIROS Empowering Temporary Foreign Workers project is featured in The Catholic Register.

This will be a better summer for migrant workers on Canadian farms, but only because local health authorities have become better at identifying and controlling COVID-19 outbreaks and not because Canada has addressed fundamental issues that made COVID into a rolling disaster across farm country the last two summers, says Connie Sorio.

KAIROS and the United Church of Canada wrote to partners in the Philippines expressing solidarity, witness, and support in the aftermath of the presidential and vice-presidential elections on May 9. Our partners, including the National Council of Churches of the Philippines, have reported malfunctioning vote counting machines and irregularities in the conduct of the election. They are calling on people to remain critical and vigilant.

“Alouette Sisters” Ruth Walmsley, Catherine Hembling, and Janette McIntosh will share their experience of engaging in spiritually rooted non-violent civil disobedience. The three were arrested in the Fall of 2021 for acting to stop the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion and served 9 days together at the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.

Planning is underway for Climate Action Month this September! KAIROS began Climate Action Month in 2019 to galvanize awareness and action on the climate crisis and intersecting issues such as Indigenous rights and migrant justice. Climate Action Month also amplifies the World Council of Churches’ Season of Creation, which runs from the World Day of Prayer for Creation on September 1 to St Francis of Assisi Day on October 4. Stay tuned for updates!

OHCOW partners with KAIROS on its Empowering Temporary Foreign Workers during COVID-19 project. It provides resources for migrant workers in Ontario, such as regional lists of mental health services.

Recently, OHCOW has been working on an exciting and practical solution to combatting the coronavirus. The Corsi-Rosenthal Box is an affordable air purifier that uses a box fan and air filters. OHCOW is sourcing materials for community organizations to assemble and supply these purifiers to the workers’ housing units. The benefits of these boxes will extend well beyond the pandemic by helping to ensure healthier air quality for workers’ homes.

Celebrating 50 years of sowing life, territory, and peace in Colombia

On July 21, the Organización Femenina Popular (OFP), a KAIROS Women, Peace and Security partner in Colombia, will celebrate its 50th anniversary  – 50 years of working with communities and grassroots women in the Magdelana Medio region to build just, sustainable, and equitable peace, with a feminist face. The OFP has been, is, and will continue to be a reference locally, nationally, and internationally for gender justice, peace, and human rights. 

For more than 20 of these years, KAIROS has partnered with the OFP. The organization was formative in the development of our Women of Courage program, and in our understanding of women, peace and security.
