Everyone is invited to join us on Thursday, February 16, 7:00 – 8:30 PM Eastern time for an online event with global partners who are advocating for mining justice. Joan Kuyek, a founder of MiningWatch and author of the book Unearthing Justice: How to Protect Your Community From the Mining Industry, will moderate the panel and share her extensive knowledge of mining and resistance in Canada. Fr. Jacques Nzumbu, SJ, a Congolese priest living in Montreal, will share his research and stories regarding cobalt extraction in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fr. Dário Bossi, coordinator of the Comboni Missionaries in Brazil and a member of the Iglesias y Mineria (Churches and Mining) network will talk about mining in his community.
Seeking justice in resource extraction has long been a goal for Development and Peace (Caritas Canada) and KAIROS, and more recently for the Student Christian Movement (SCM). These three groups have organized a learning and action series for students and young adults that includes an in-person study of Joan Kuyek’s book, Unearthing Justice: How to Protect Your Community from the Mining Industry. All are welcome to this online event to learn more. Follow up to the webinar will include planning an action at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto in March.
