KAIROS marks National Indigenous History Month with a series of reflections that centre truth, celebrate Indigenous changemakers, and challenge us all to take meaningful action. As we honour the 10th anniversary of the TRC’s Final Report, we invite you to revisit the 94 Calls to Action, deepen your understanding of allyship, and celebrate the strength, resilience and brilliance of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. A decade has passed since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its groundbreaking report and 94 Calls to Action. Rooted in the voices of more than 6,000 Survivors, it called Canada to face the truths of its Residential School System and commit to lasting change. As we mark this anniversary, we ask: how far have we come? And how far must we still go? Revisit the Calls to Action—and recommit to truth, justice and reconciliation.

As Leah Reesor-Keller concludes her term as KAIROS’ Transitional Executive Director, the Steering Committee extends heartfelt thanks for her compassionate and effective leadership. On the one-year anniversary of the Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage (May 22), a broad coalition of Canadian church leaders representing more than four million people wrote to the Prime Minister. Their message was urgent and unified: Canada must act now to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. 

KAIROS joined local environmental and ecumenical partners in Ottawa for the No Faith in Fossil Fuels rally and press conference on May 12 on Parliament Hill. The rally was a culminating demonstration for the Pilgrimage for the Planet, a 194-kilometre bike ride from Montreal to Ottawa in support of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Cry, the Beloved Planet: A Mandate for the G7 will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes parish (520 Sherbourne Street - Sherbourne subway) and live on YouTube. Development & Peace – Caritas Canada and the Jubilee People’s Forum invite you to an evening with Cardinal Pedro Barreto of Peru. He will talk about Jubilee and the G7 and offer prayers on behalf of Our Common Home and all those oppressed by debt.

Two remarkable KAIROS partners—Salome Owuonda (Kenya) and Tarek Al-Zoughbi (West Bank) — will be in Toronto before heading to the G7 Jubilee People’s Forum in Calgary. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear their powerful stories at a Lunch-n-Learn gathering during their layover. Location: 80 Hayden Street, Toronto. Space is limited. Lunch will be provided. Led by the Calgary Interfaith Council, this service will include voices and elements from Muslim, Hindu, Indigenous, Jewish, Buddhist, Bahai, Sikh, Unitarian and Christian traditions. Christian representation will include renowned advocate for people and the planet, Cardinal Barreto from Peru. Langar (free meal) will be provided by the Calgary Sikh community following the service. Join the People’s Forum participants and other civil society organizations in public action that calls G7 leaders to justice. Meet at City Hall in downtown Calgary for a program beginning at noon. The solidarity walk begins at 2:00 p.m. with rally stops at various prominent G7 locations in the downtown area. The People’s Forum will maintain a presence at City Hall Plaza throughout the afternoon to engage the public. Join us for the whole afternoon or just come when you can. More details will be circulated to those in the Calgary area closer to the date.

Marking ten years since the late Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical, Laudato Si’ at 10: Raising Hope, Demanding Justice brought together voices calling for bold, faithful action for our planet and all who call it home. From May 24–31, guest contributors shared powerful reflections rooted in hope, justice and ecological solidarity. Missed it? From May 24 to 31, during Laudato Si’ Week, communities across Canada and around the world took part in Caritas Internationalis’ Relay of Hope, a powerful week of prayer, reflection and action calling for global debt justice. This ecumenical initiative, held in the lead-up to the G7 Summit, brought people together across faith traditions to shine a light on the urgent need for economic transformation. KAIROS staff engaged in their own relay during their staff retreat.

Ahead of the G7 Summit, KAIROS and ecumenical partners have sent a powerful letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to champion debt cancellation for countries facing intersecting crises. Rooted in faith and justice, the letter calls on Canada to show bold moral leadership on the global stage.

In the lead up to the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, social and ecological justice activists and people of faith and conscience from across Canada and the world will gather in Calgary from June 12 to 15 for the G7 Jubilee People’s Forum, calling for global debt justice. The G7 Jubilee People’s Forum is part of the Jubilee 2025: Turn Debt into Hope campaign, which is the Canadian component of a global petition campaign that calls for the cancellation of unjust global debt, as well as financial reform to prevent future debt crises.

A growing debt crisis is siphoning vital resources from healthcare, education and climate action. Canada has a unique opportunity to lead on global debt justice by supporting bold reforms, including debt cancellation and a UN Framework Convention on Sovereign Debt. This Briefing Note outlines key messages and actions for Canada to take, rooted in its history of leadership and aligned with global calls for change. This resource will help deepen your understanding of global debt justice.

What can a humble berry teach us about justice, community and renewal? In a three-part book study of The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer, participants explored themes of abundance and reciprocity through Indigenous wisdom and lived experience. Featuring powerful guest speakers, this KAIROS series connected ecological justice, reconciliation and social enterprise with the spirit of Jubilee.
