The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is underway, from November 25 to December 10, Human Rights Day. This year’s theme is UNITE! Activism to End Violence against Women & Girls. KAIROS and For the Love of Creation wanted the voices of Indigenous peoples and Global South women to be heard at COP27 in Sharm al-Sheikh so they sent a 10-member delegation that met with other Indigenous and Global South climate activists and key government officials to share concerns and solutions and to advocate for a seat at decision-making tables. Several delegates facilitated the first ever KAIROS Blanket Exercise at a climate COP! The experiences were different, ranging from people on a bridge braving a minus-twenty-degree wind chill to a large circle of people gathered on autumn leaves with robust drumming, but the sentiments are remarkably similar. KAIROS local groups convened during COP27 to pray, sing, share reflections, and listen to the KAIROS and For the Love of Creation delegates.

“During the vigil, I felt a sense of praying with the Earth, not only for the Earth,” said Wendy Janzen from Waterloo, Ontario. “I felt connected to other groups also praying or taking action this weekend, and to the delegations in Egypt. And I felt moved and inspired by the participants, the words, and the singing.”

2021 was a year of reflection and celebration, marking 20 years of spirited action for justice. We are proud to report our results from key initiatives on Indigenous Rights, Migrant Justice, Women, Peace and Security, and Ecological and Climate Justice.

Global partners are part of who we are as KAIROS. They ground and inform our advocacy work on human rights, ecological and climate justice, corporate accountability, gender justice, and peace. Although these partnerships are about much more than funding, the small grants we provide are tangible expressions of our solidarity that enable partners to do vital work.   

The 5th annual 60s Scoop Gathering took place Oct 27 to 30 at Waupoos Family Farm located just outside the city limits south of Ottawa. Waupoos Farm has been the go-to site for our gatherings because it has modern amenities and they allow us to use the land for ceremonies such as the sacred fire, sweat lodges, and the new set up of the 60s Scoop learning tipi.

The House of Commons environment committee approved Bill C-226, the Environmental Racism Bill, without amendment on November 14. It is now ready for third reading and a final vote in the House. Please contact your MP today urging their support for this bill, in addition to the two corporate accountability bills (C-262 and C-263), to tackle environmental racism abroad.

Take Heart: Encouragement for Earth’s Weary Lovers | Conversation with Bob Haverluck and Kathleen Moore
