Climate action is a yearlong commitment. Rather than assign one month for action, KAIROS is dedicating specific weeks in the year for focused learning and action. Stay tuned for details of our first Climate Action Week, June 5-11. The theme for the week is Decolonizing Climate Action: Centering Indigenous Ways of Knowing. 

Bill C-226 passed in the House of Commons and is currently in second reading in the Senate. Please write to senators today urging their support for the bill. Let’s ensure that this bill, which addresses environmental racism, becomes law this summer. 

Canada’s National Observer published this opinion article by KAIROS’ Silvia Vasquez-Olguin and Acción Ecológica’s Ivonne Yanez. They write that it’s high time Canada aligns its trade agreements with its commitments to feminism, biodiversity and climate justice.

KAIROS' Ottawa office at the Bronson Centre closed its doors for the last time on April 30. The space served KAIROS for 22 years, generating fond memories and serving as headquarters for important initiatives such as KAIROS’ Let Justice Roll program.

The South Sudan Council of Churches, a KAIROS partner and participant in the Women, Peace and Security program, issued a powerful statement on non-violence after the Ecumenical Peace Pilgrimage to South Sudan by Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in March.

In solidarity with the citizens and churches in Sudan, KAIROS joins our partners in the region, including the Fellowship of Christian Council and Churches on the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa (FECCLAHA), in expressing our deepest concerns over the immense disruption and country-wide crisis, the grief experienced by citizens due to injuries and the loss of lives and property, as well as the general destruction caused by the conflict.

KAIROS calls on Canada to prioritize human rights and environment defenders over support for mining companies. We are one of the 27 organizations – in addition to 39 academics - that signed a submission regarding this call, addressed to the Universal Periodic Review Working Group of the United National Human Rights Council.
