This International Women’s Day we will march under the banner, Balance for Better. What does balance mean in a context of growing extremism, patriarchy and misogyny?

KAIROS is greatly encouraged by the recent announcement that in November the Government of Canada will replace its problematic Caregiver Pilot Program with two 5-year pilot programs that will provide migrant caregivers with a pathway to permanent residence and the flexibility to change jobs quickly and easily. Under these pilot programs, family members will be able to accompany caregivers through work and study permits.

Your letters to senators are making a difference on Bill C-262 (the UN Declaration Act)!  To date more than 2,000 letters have been sent, and many senators are supportive of the Bill. A few are not. Help keep up the pressure to ensure that Canada’s laws are in harmony with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Learn more, take action and spread the word!

Ten faith-based organizations – including KAIROS – have urged Canada’s senators to support Bill C-262. In a joint letter released on February 7, the senators were reminded that the time for action is now. Senator Peter Harder, the Government Representative in the Senate, cited this letter when he spoke about Bill C-262 in the Senate Chamber on February 21.

In December, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination called on Canada to seek independent, expert advice on implementation of the right to free, prior and informed consent.

The Canadian government will table the 2019/2020 budget on March 21. Let’s ensure that women peace builders in the Global South receive the development assistance they need to lay the groundwork for resilient peace in some of the world’s most protracted conflict zones. On February 20, MP Hélène Laverdière (Laurier–Sainte-Marie) presented KAIROS’ petition in the House of Commons, calling on the government to fully fund its Feminist International Assistance Policy and increase its international assistance from the current 0.26 percent of gross national income to 0.7 percent, over 10 years.
