September is Climate Action Month at KAIROS! It will be a time to address the climate crisis and highlight the climate justice work of our members and networks. Every day in September, an event, blog post, environmental challenge – or some combination of all three – will be posted and saved on a calendar on the KAIROS website. These will include regional, national, and international events and resources.

A just transition to a clean energy economy in Canada cannot be successful without the inclusion of remote communities. In May, a promising step forward was taken with the signing of an agreement between an Inuit corporation and an independent power producer. Project Innavik will build a 7.5-megawatt dam to serve the community of Inukjuak, on the Inukjuak river in Quebec, to replace diesel as the source of power for 1,800 people.

On July 11, all 14 civil society and labour union representatives of the government’s Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Body on Responsible Business Conduct Abroad tendered their resignations. The unanimous decision to resign was due to the erosion of trust and confidence in the government’s commitment to international corporate accountability.

Canada must do more to support women human rights defenders, concludes a parliamentary report released this summer. Committee members listened to the testimonies of women human rights defenders from across the globe,across the globe, including Gloria Chicaiza, the Mining Justice Coordinator at Acción Ecológica, KAIROS’ partner in Ecuador.

On July 25, the Organización Femenina Popular (OFP) inaugurated the Casa Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos de las Mujeres de la región del Magdalena Medio, or the Museum of Memory and Human Rights of the Women of the Magdalena Medio Region. The Casa Museo is in Barrancabermeja and is the first of its kind in Colombia.

The Organización Femenina Popular (OFP) and the Mesa Ecuménica por La Paz (MEP) have made it clear that there is nothing post-conflict about Colombia and are relentless in their peacebuilding efforts.

Two KAIROS staff, along with Laura Serrano from the OFP, travelled to Quito, Ecuador in June for a week of activities hosted and planned by KAIROS partner Acción Ecológica.

While deeply disappointed that Bill C-262 died on the Order Paper in the Senate this summer after being passed by elected officials, KAIROS is now focusing on ensuring that UN Declaration legislation that is at least as strong as Bill C-262 is reintroduced as a government bill in the next Parliamentary session. 

The application deadline for the Advisor, Human Resources position at KAIROS is September 12.

We hope to see you at the Regional Gatherings planned for October and November in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Edmonton, that will include great topics and guest speakers.

KAIROS will release its Epiphany worship resource in mid-October. Listen to the Children will consider how children can lead us to transformation and will be structured around the eight-week Epiphany season using some of the Year A lectionary scriptures and additional scriptures.
