KAIROS kicks off the first of three 2023 KAIROS Climate Action Weeks on June 5 (World Environment Day) - ending on June 11 - to galvanize awareness and action on the climate crisis. This week’s theme, Decolonizing Climate Action: Centering Indigenous Ways of Knowing, will permeate through the Week’s resources and online event, Climate Action Dialogues: Indigenous and Global South Perspectives on Just Transition. To receive updates about Climate Action Weeks, please subscribe to our e-newsletter and select “Ecological Justice” as an area of interest.  

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time earmarked by the Canadian government to learn more about Indigenous history, cultures and perspectives. At KAIROS, we encourage year long learning – including the impacts of colonization in Canada – in parallel with active efforts to decolonize and work towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Bill C-226 is at second reading in the Senate with an anticipated vote on June 6 to pass this stage and move to committee review. Please urge swift passage of Bill C-226 into law. Write to senators today if you have not done so already. KAIROS provides a letter, which you can add to. Please help ensure that this bill, aimed at redressing environmental racism in Canada, passes third and final reading this month. 

KAIROS joined over 100 environmental, human rights, and climate justice organizations to send a letter to the Prime Minister about eliminating fossil fuel subsidies through a robust assessment framework.

When you look up at the night’s sky, what do you see? Indigenous star stories are not just stories of “higher beings” and their often-amorous encounters but were seen as part of an all-encompassing perspective of life and spirituality. To the Anishinaabe, stars are animate because they move and have a spirit. Knowledge Keeper, Tina Steven is excited to share her wisdom on Indigenous constellations to help you understand the greater sacred meaning of the Indigenous star stories and why the stars are extremely important in providing an important moral or way to live one’s life.
