For the Love of Creation has launched an e-petition calling on the Canadian government to take stronger climate action. Even before the emergence of COVID-19, we knew that we were entering into a crucial decade for climate action. Now more than ever, we need meaningful and immediate action to reduce greenhouse gases and support climate change adaptation.
For the Love of Creation was launched in April 2020 as a faith-based initiative for climate justice. KAIROS is one of more than 30 endorsing organizations in this initiative, working together in the areas of political advocacy, theological reflection, and local and congregation engagement. For the Love of Creation is founded on principles of faith, paying particular attention to the voices of youth and Indigenous people.
The e-petition acknowledges this foundation in faith and Indigenous rights and recognizes that COVID-19 has placed us in the position of asking how to best move forward in ways that promote justice, equity and sustainability. The petition calls upon the Government of Canada to:
- Commit to reducing Canadian GHG emissions by 60 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, and invest in a just transition;
- Honour the rights of Indigenous peoples;
- Commit equal support for climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in the Global South; and
- Respond to the pandemic in the Global South.
The e-petition will remain open until October 6, by which time we hope to have at least 5000 signatures in order to attract the attention of MPs, the Prime Minister and other government officials. While the key points of the petition were shared with the Prime Minister and Minister Freeland in an open letter this week, we need your help to reinforce this message. A strong showing of signatures from across the country can make that happen! Please help us reach our goal by signing the e-petition yourself, forwarding this email to friends and colleagues and sharing the petition on social media platforms. Here is a Facebook post that you can share right now.
