Streams of Justice: KAIROS Atlantic Gathering 2019

All are welcome to join us for a diverse, inter-generational gathering May 2 – 5, 2019 at Mount Allison University in what is known as Sackville, NB, part of the greater territory of Mi’kma’ki, to learn about the work of the KAIROS movement while developing concrete advocacy skills.

Call for Volunteers

Planning is in full swing for a new kind of KAIROS Atlantic Gathering and we need you!

The Gathering will take place on the unceded ancestral lands of the Mi’kmaw people.  Working with the Mi’kmaw members of the planning team and others who bring diversity to the group, we will endeavor to gather in a good way that is inclusive of all who want to be companions for justice. The Gathering will be two hundred strong with peacemakers from all walks of life: young people and seasoned advocates, newcomers to this land, Indigenous people and long-time settlers, and people of all different abilities. We will need many volunteers to pull this all together. Please contact Shannon now at sneufeldt@kairoscanada.org to volunteer for any of the following roles that will start early in January.

The Logistics Team needs more helpers to negotiate smudging times and a sacred fire location with Mount Allison University,  prepare pronoun buttons for everyone to choose,  create environmentally-friendly registration packages,, and  ensure everyone’s physical needs are accommodated.

The Program Team needs a diversity of voices to ensure that our sessions are inclusive and inspirational for all, not just a few. We need people who can honour the Mi’kmaw spirituality of the host peoples and the Christian faith of the KAIROS founders in a way that is welcoming for participants of all ages and all faiths, and those of no faith.

The Outreach Team needs more helpers to ensure that all parts of the Atlantic are represented.  We need volunteer ambassadors in all areas of Atlantic Canada, especially Newfoundland and Labrador. Additionally, we are in need of ambassadors who will help ensure that there is a solid representation at the Gathering from various Indigenous and newcomer communities, and will reach out as well to young, new, or potential activists.

The Sponsorship Team needs help to ensure we have subsidies in place for  young adults (18-35 years), Indigenous and other racialized peoples, low income people, people with disabilities, families, and those living farthest from the Gathering.

Throughout the Gathering, there will be five unique “Streams of Justice” which flow separately for parts of the weekend and come together at other times.  Participants will be asked to choose one of these five streams:

  • Migrant Justice
  • KAIROS Blanket Exercise
  • Ecological Justice
  • Women, Peace and Security
  • Indigenous Rights

In addition to volunteers for each team outlined above, we are in need of volunteers to join small planning groups for each of these streams.

To volunteer or nominate someone for any of these roles, please contact Shannon at sneufeldt@kairoscanada.org with the subject line ‘Volunteer for Atlantic Gathering.’
