MP Laverdière presents the “Women of Courage” petition in the House of Commons

KAIROS had started an online letter campaign to ask Canadians to send a letter to their Member of Parliament asking for an increase in international assistance and an increase in funding to women peace builders. Our goal was to ensure that women peace builders in the Global South receive the development assistance they need to lay the groundwork for resilient peace in some of the world’s most protracted conflict zones. We know that when women are involved, peace processes are not only more equitable and just, they are also more sustainable. We know the Canadian government knows this. It’s recognized in its Feminist International Assistance Policy. Learn more about KAIROS’ Women of Courage: Women, Peace and Security program, and the important role its five partners play in peace building.

On February 20, 2019, MP Hélène Laverdière (Laurier–Sainte-Marie) presented the KAIROS petition in the House of Commons, calling the government to fully fund its Feminist International Assistance Policy – targeting assistance to women-led grassroots organizations – and increase its international assistance from the current 0.26 percent of gross national income to 0.7 percent, over 10 years.
