Launching Mother Earth and Resource Extraction: Women Defending Land and Water

On November 25, 2019, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, KAIROS will launch the first phase of Mother Earth and Resource Extraction: Women Defending Land and Water. Mother Earth and Resource Extraction (MERE) is a living digital resource hub developed for and in consultation with women land and water defenders who are at the forefront in the protection of the environment, in Canada and across the globe. The hub brings together a range of original and existing material to support research, advocacy, information sharing, and movement building around the subject of resource extraction and its gendered implications. The hub’s first phase focuses on Latin America. The second phase, which will concentrate on Canada, will launch in spring 2020.

To celebrate the hub’s launch, KAIROS is hosting a public conversation between two women land and water defenders from Latin America, Natalia Atz Sunuc (Guatemala) and Isabel Zuleta (Colombia), on the evening of Wednesday, November 27 at Ryerson University, entitled MERE Hub Launch. The conversation will be moderated by Magdalena Ugarte (Ryerson University) and will include Indigenous drum and song as well as a dance performance on the current political context human rights defenders face in Colombia.

Isabel Zuleta, of the Rios Vivos Movement in Colombia, is on a month-long tour of Canada, Energy Justice Tour: Defending the Cauca River in Colombia, sponsored by many civil society, labor, and church organizations, including KAIROS.
